How many times you might hear those questions as a cosplayer in your life, I'd rather not count it. To explain the love for cosplay to someone is not that easy, because the person opposite should have a certain imagination.
What is cosplay? Costume and play!
The word cosplay is composed of costume and play. I don't need a translation of these words, because everyone should have understood what it means by now. The so-called cosplayers spend a lot of time watching anime, reading mangas or comics and watching various movies and series on TV and in the cinema. They are fans of various fictional characters and imitate them with the help of costume, wig and make-up. In the process, some materials, tools and a lot of sweat, tears and blood come together. A cosplay is brought to life not least by the wearer and is best presented at a convention or a photo shoot. Some cosplayers put themselves so intensely into their character that they would never want to take off their costume again. You want to know more about cosplay? Cosplay can be everything and of course a fetish
I believe that cosplay can really be anything. Surely some people in the community see it a little differently. On the one hand, there are those who believe that a cosplay is really only considered right if the outfit is really 1:1 based on the character. For me the motto is: Everything is possible, as long as you enjoy it! Oh man, that sounds like the advertising slogan of an electronics store.
Everybody should tinker/cut/glue whatever with his ways and possibilities and never let himself be talked into thinking that it is stupid. The fun of designing should be in the foreground and of course not everyone has the same prerequisites for it. Be it in terms of skill or wallet. Of course you can also buy a cosplay if you don't have the time/possibility to make one yourself. Or you just don't feel like it. It doesn't matter, why do you have shops where you can buy everything you need for cosplaying? From cosplay contact lenses to material to the finished costume.
You can let your creativity run wild when designing costumes
There are cosplayers who throw characters together, a so-called mashup (something like that also exists in music and is often found with DJs). In a mashup, two characters are created into one, like the popular slave Leia thrown together with a Disney princess. Opinions are divided, but I'm more for it than against it, because I don't always stick to the original and give the reins to my artistic freedom. I also love completely freely interpreted costumes that are directed at a character of their own design or only make slight reference to a role model, because these cosplays then have something "of their own", does anyone understand what I mean?
Why cosplay again now?
I wanted to answer the question "Why cosplay? That can have different reasons. First of all, there are certainly a few cosplayers who just love to showcase themselves. At cosplay contests, the diligent Lieschen can show their skills and present their elaborate props ( What is this again? A post about props will follow) and costumes. I love to watch such contests, because many of the participants make a real little show out of it, that's the way it should be! In Cosplay you don't just present any costume, no, you become a character you like. But there are also limits, because just because you look like Deadpool, you shouldn't necessarily behave like him all the time. This can be quite annoying at conventions, when about 20 deadpools mix up the area.
The love for crafting and designing is another reason. I love to do small frickel work, sewing is not my favourite thing. But cutting, gluing, fringing around, that's my thing. Finding solutions for things that don't work right now. When that is done, I am really proud. And so are many others. You are simply mega proud of your work! It's a damn good feeling.
To give oneself completely to the material, that is beautiful. But it's also a lot of fun in twos or in groups! So another reason: Cosplay connects. In a group it is much more fun than alone. What would a lonely Darth Vader be without his storm troopers? Or a Wonder Woman without the Justice League that would be an independent, strong woman you know what I mean. Cosplaying together with your partner is also a lot of fun, because you can motivate each other. I give you the tip: look for someone who shares this hobby with you, because going to the con, the photo shoot or to cosplay meetings alone is just stupid. Ok, counterargument: You get to know many new people at cons, photoshoots and cosplay meetings, but you can also meet them as a couple or with friends.
